Muscle Pain Q & A
What is Muscle Pain?
Muscle pain, or myalgia, is one of the most common musculoskeletal problems. Almost everyone will experience muscle pain at some time during their life.
There’s muscle tissue throughout your entire body, so it’s possible to experience muscle pain almost anywhere. Usually, muscle pain subsides on its own with rest and conservative measures of care, but sometimes it points to a more serious underlying health problem.
What are Some Common Causes of Muscle Pain?
Usually, muscle pain occurs for one of three reasons:
- Overuse, as a result of exercise
- Playing sports, or physical activity
- Muscle tension, or stress
You might also experience muscle pain if you pull a muscle while working, or because you skipped warmups or cool downs before or after an intense workout.
Certain underlying medical conditions can also cause muscle pain. Our team at MidJersey Orthopaedics regularly diagnoses and treats muscle pain caused by:
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Myofascial pain syndrome
- Autoimmune disorders like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis
- Thyroid problems
You might also experience muscle pain as a result of the flu, common cold, or using certain medications like statins or ACE inhibitors.
When Should I See a Doctor About Muscle Pain?
Most muscle pain subsides on its own with rest and the use of over-the-counter medications. However, you should make an appointment with our team at MidJersey Orthopaedics if your muscle pain:
- Lasts for more than a few days
- Arises without an obvious cause
- Occurs following a medication change
- Occurs with a rash
- Occurs with a fever
You should also make an appointment at MidJersey Orthopaedics if your muscle pain prevents you from going to work or participating in routine activities.
How is Muscle Pain Diagnosed?
To diagnose muscle pain, your MidJersey Orthopaedics physician performs a detailed history, and conducts a thorough physical examination. Often, an x-ray is obtained to evaluate the underlying bones and joints.
To rule out other potential problems, your doctor might also order an MRI to get a closer look at your muscles and soft tissues.
How is Muscle Pain Treated?
Treatment for muscle pain depends on the source and severity of your symptoms. Usually, the physicians at MidJersey Orthopaedics recommend conservative treatments such as rest, ice, and elevation, physical therapy, or light stretching and exercise. Acupuncture is also an option for pain relief.
If your pain persists or gets worse, your physician might recommend trigger point injections or nerve blocks. Laser therapy may also be an option. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary. Our team offers both traditional orthopaedic surgery and minimally invasive techniques.
