Concussion Management Q & A

What Causes a Concussion?

A concussion, also called a mild traumatic brain injury, occurs when a forceful impact on your head or body makes your brain hit against your skull. The trauma damages your nerves, bruises the brain, and results in changes in brain function.

What Symptoms Develop Following a Concussion?

Concussion symptoms can be mild enough to overlook. They may not appear for days or even weeks. But even if the symptoms are mild or delayed, the brain still suffers damage.

Most people don’t lose consciousness after suffering a concussion. If they do pass out, it’s only for a few minutes.

The symptoms of a concussion include:

  • Confusion
  • Headache
  • Memory loss
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Loss of balance
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Difficulty concentrating

Sleeping habits may also change. Concussions can cause insomnia or make a person sleep more than normal.

What Concussion Management Services are Available?

The team at MidJersey Orthopaedics offers comprehensive evaluations and expert treatment to anyone who has a concussion. They also have a concussion management program for local coaches, schools, and athletes that includes:

  • Education and Prevention: The team gets together with trainers, coaches, parents, and teams to provide informal discussions about concussion prevention and treatment.
  • Pre-Season Baseline ImPACT® Testing: The ImPACT test is a computer-based exam that assesses the cognitive functioning of athletes. Pre-season baseline testing is helpful if the athlete has an injury during the season, because the baseline test can be compared to the post-injury test to help decide when the brain is fully recovered.
  • Injury Evaluation: If one of your athletes sustains a brain injury, or you suspect they suffered an injury, the team from MidJersey Orthopaedics is available at all times for consultation and treatment. On weekends and in the evenings, one team member is on call for advice. They may recommend an immediate evaluation in an urgent care facility or emergency department if the injury occurs off-hours. A same-day appointment can treat most concussions. Your young athlete receives a full clinical evaluation with a specialist and has an on-site MRI if needed.
  • Return to Activities: The MidJersey Orthopaedics team supervises and coordinates your athlete’s treatment, recovery, and safe return to schoolwork, home activities, and sports. They create customized return-to-exercise programs based on each person’s symptoms, clinical exams, and follow-up ImPACT testing. The team stays in close communication with parents, teachers, athletic trainers, and coaches, keeping them informed of their athlete’s progress. With the parents’ permission, coaches and trainers who want to assist in their athlete’s recovery are welcome to work with the team.
