Acupuncture treats many health problems, restores your energy, and is so effective for relieving pain that health care professionals recommend it over medication for treating chronic back pain. The licensed acupuncturist at MidJersey Orthopaedics, with offices in Flemington and Bridgewater, New Jersey, has extensive experience providing a variety of acupuncture techniques, including traditional, Japanese, and auricular acupuncture. If you’re interested in acupuncture as a primary treatment or to complement your medical care, call the Bridgewater office, or book an appointment online.
Acupuncture enhances your body’s healing ability by targeting qi, the natural energy that flows through pathways in your body called meridians. Meridians are associated with specific body organs or systems. When qi is blocked, you become ill or develop a disease.
Inserting acupuncture needles into the blocked pathways restores the flow of energy, which supports your body’s natural healing ability. Acupuncture activates your central nervous system. As a result, your brain releases endorphins and serotonin that alter your perception of pain.
Acupuncture has an anti-inflammatory effect, boosts immunity, and helps regulate the endocrine system. Studies also suggest that acupuncture reduces pain by improving communication between nerves in your brain.
In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture has a long record of effectively treating many health conditions. More recently, Western medical practitioners have started to study acupuncture and recommend the treatment to their patients.

If you haven’t experienced acupuncture and you’re envisioning the typical needle used to inject medication, put that image out of your head.
Acupuncture needles are very different from other needles. They’re extremely thin, flexible, and tapered, a design that gives them the ability to glide easily through your skin and into the targeted acupuncture point, or acupoint.
Most patients don’t feel the needle upon insertion. You simply lay back and relax while the needle stays in place for about 25 minutes.
During your session, your licensed acupuncturist may twirl the needle or send a mild electrical current through the needle to enhance its impact. You may feel sensations such as a slight tingling, but acupuncture never causes pain.
The number of treatments you need depends on your underlying health condition and the severity of your symptoms. Minor problems may only need 1-2 treatments, while chronic conditions require more.
